The LGU Sogod Demo Farm: A Vision for Food Security and Agriculture Progress
The LGU Sogod Demo Farm: A Vision for Food Security and Agriculture Progress
The LGU Sogod Demo Farm stands as one of the most innovative initiatives established by our Municipal Mayor, Hon. Sheffered Lino S. Tan, in response to the growing issue of food insufficiency. Several years ago, Mayor Tan envisioned providing the people of Kahupian with a dedicated piece of land where they could cultivate their own crops without the burden of rental costs with free provision of vegetable seedlings. This initiative is a key component of the municipality’s food security program.
Through his strong advocacy, Mayor Tan has committed to positioning Sogod as one of the leading vegetable producers in Southern Leyte, with a clear priority for local market supply. Kahupian, with its vast land area and ideal elevation of 2,500 feet above sea level, offers perfect conditions for growing high-value crops such as fruits and vegetables.
Mayor Tan’s vision reflects his deep concern for his constituents and his unwavering dedication to agriculture as a major pillar of local development. His leadership exemplifies how public service can directly address the essential needs of the community—especially in achieving food security and sustainable livelihoods.

SLSU and LGU Sogod Ink Two MOA for Sustainability and Wellness
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Sogod officially signed two Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) on August 6, 2025, at the SLSU Board Room, Main Campus. The agreements aim to strengthen environmental sustainability efforts and promote the physical wellness of LGU personnel.
The first MOA focuses on proper waste management. It supports SLSU’s commitment to sustainable practices in line with its participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. University President Dr. Jude A. Duarte emphasized the shift from waste disposal to waste recovery, promoting composting, recycling, and awareness campaigns within the university community. As part of the agreement, LGU Sogod will collect recyclable and residual waste from SLSU every Wednesday, while the university manages biodegradable waste internally.

Hon. Sheffered Lino S. Tan, Municipal Mayor of Sogod, delivered a message of support, emphasizing the shared goals of both institutions. Dr. Dewoowoogen P. Baclayon, VP for Administration and Finance, also shared key points about the implementation of the agreements.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Celebration and Lunching of the nationwide Cervical Cancer Screening Sirvices
Cervical Cancer Awareness Celebration and Lunching of the nationwide Cervical Cancer Screening Sirvices
The Cervical Cancer Awareness Celebration and Launching of the Nationwide Cervical Cancer Screening Services is happening today, August 13, 2025, at the Rural Health Unit – Sogod, organized by RHU Sogod in partnership with the Provincial Health Services Office and DOH. Cervical cancer remains a major public health concern, ranking among the top causes of cancer-related deaths among women in the Philippines, yet it is highly preventable through early detection and HPV vaccination. This event bridges the knowledge gap by promoting education on cervical cancer prevention, encouraging regular screening, and advocating for HPV vaccination as a primary preventive measure.
A key highlight of the celebration is the free Vaginal Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) screening being availed by forty (40) women aged 30–65 — an important step toward early diagnosis and better health outcomes. Informative sessions inspire the community to take an active role in protecting women’s health and emphasize the importance of preventive care. Special guests include Ms. Alma Cecilia R. Malazarte, Provincial NCD Coordinator and Guest Speaker, Mr. John Paul Roca, DMO IV from PDOHO, and Ms. Fritz Jill T. Gelig, Provincial Health Promotion Officer.
Guided by the message, “Cervical Cancer Awareness: BABAE, MAHALAGA KA!”, the event reaffirms the commitment to empower women with accurate information, accessible health services, and the motivation to take charge of their well-being — paving the way for a healthier and cancer-free future.
